Thermal oxidizers

Not every pollutant can be recovered economically. When recovery is not practical, thermal oxidation is often the most reliable method for achieving high destruction efficiencies and complying with emission limits.

Thermal oxidizers destroy pollutants by heating the process air to temperatures typically between 750°C and 1,100°C, converting organic compounds into carbon dioxide and water vapor. The technology is widely used for the treatment of VOC emissions, odorous compounds and hazardous organic contaminants across a broad range of industries.

Modern thermal oxidation systems can achieve destruction efficiencies exceeding 99%, while advanced heat recovery systems significantly reduce energy consumption and operating costs.

At PCA Air, we design and supply thermal oxidation systems ranging from simple direct-fired units to highly efficient regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTOs), always selecting the solution that best fits the process and economic requirements of the application.

When is thermal oxidation the right solution?

Home 05 Real RTO

Thermal oxidation is typically considered when:

  • Emission limits require very high removal efficiencies
  • Pollutants are difficult to capture or recover
  • Multiple organic contaminants are present
  • Pollutant concentrations vary significantly
  • Odour destruction is a key objective
  • A single robust solution is preferred over multiple treatment stages

Because thermal oxidizers can handle a wide variety of compounds and operating conditions, they are often the most versatile emission control technologies available.

Vesuvius direct thermal oxidizer

Direct thermal oxidizers (DTO)

The simplest form of thermal oxidation.

A burner heats the process air directly to the required destruction temperature before discharge.

Typically suited for:

  • Smaller airflows
  • Higher VOC concentrations
  • Intermittent operation
  • Applications where operational flexibility is important

Advantages

  • Lowest investment cost
  • Simple construction
  • Flexible operating range
  • Fast startup and shutdown

Recuperative thermal oxidizers (RTOX)

Recuperative systems use a heat exchanger to recover energy from the treated exhaust gas and transfer it to the incoming process air.

This reduces fuel consumption while maintaining the operating flexibility of a conventional thermal oxidizer

Typically suited for:

  • Moderate airflows
  • Moderate to high VOC concentrations
  • Continuous production processes

Advantages

  • Improved energy efficiency
  • Lower operating costs
  • Moderate investment cost
  • Reliable and proven technology

Regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTO)

Regenerative thermal oxidizers recover heat using ceramic media beds capable of storing large amounts of thermal energy.

The recovered heat is continuously transferred back to the incoming process air, resulting in extremely high thermal efficiencies.

Although the investment cost is higher, the reduced natural gas consumption often results in the lowest lifetime cost of ownership.

Typically suited for:

  • Large airflows
  • Low to moderate VOC concentrations
  • Continuous operation

Advantages

  • Lowest fuel consumption
  • Thermal efficiencies up to 95%+
  • Often capable of autothermal operation
  • Excellent long-term economics

More than just the oxidizer

A successful thermal oxidation project involves much more than selecting the combustion chamber.

Depending on the application, additional equipment may be required:

Heat recovery systems ● VOC concentrators ● Quench systems ● Acid gas scrubbers ● Dust filtration ● Gas conditioning equipment ● Monitoring and control systems ● Stacks and draft systems

This is particularly important for complex applications involving halogenated compounds, corrosive gases, particulate matter or solvent recovery.

PCA Air designs the complete system around the process rather than simply supplying an oxidizer.
