Gas strippers

Gas stripping is a proven technology for removing volatile compounds from industrial wastewater and process water. By bringing contaminated water into contact with air or another suitable gas, dissolved pollutants are transferred from the liquid into the gas phase.

At PCA Air, we design efficient stripping systems tailored to the pollutants, water characteristics and required treatment efficiency.

Applications

Gas stripping is particularly effective for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including Benzene, Toluene, Xylenes (BTX), MTBE, ETBE and various industrial solvents.

It can also be used to remove dissolved gases such as carbon dioxide (CO₂) and ammonia (NH₃) under suitable operating conditions.

Typical applications include industrial wastewater treatment, groundwater remediation and process water purification.

Technology

In a typical packed-column stripper, contaminated water flows downward while air moves upward. The packing creates a large contact area, allowing volatile pollutants to transfer from water into the gas stream.

Removal efficiency depends on temperature, air-to-water ratio, packing design and pollutant characteristics.

When required, the contaminated exhaust air can be treated using a scrubber, activated carbon system or thermal oxidizer.

Expertise

PCA Air combines process engineering, simulation and practical experience to design reliable, energy-efficient gas stripping systems.

Our approach considers thermodynamics, mass transfer and column hydraulics. Factors such as liquid distribution, gas-liquid contact, foaming and flooding are carefully evaluated to ensure reliable performance under real operating conditions.

Our expertise covers equipment sizing, packing selection, process optimisation and integration with downstream gas treatment technologies.

FAQ

What happens to the pollutants removed from the water?

Gas stripping transfers pollutants from the water into the gas stream rather than destroying them. Depending on the pollutants and emission limits, additional treatment using a scrubber, activated carbon or thermal oxidizer may be required.

Does gas stripping require chemical dosing?

Not always. Many VOCs can be removed using air alone. However, removing certain pollutants, such as ammonia, may require pH adjustment to improve stripping efficiency.

What determines the efficiency of a gas stripper?

Removal efficiency depends on several factors, including temperature, air-to-water ratio, packing design and liquid distribution. Proper column hydraulics and gas-liquid contact are essential for reliable performance.

How do I know if gas stripping is suitable for my wastewater?

The suitability depends on the pollutants, their volatility, water temperature and required outlet concentrations. Process simulations can help determine whether stripping is an effective solution.
